SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – An armed man behind a standoff in Salt Lake City is now behind bars. According to police the suspect wanted to hurt them, himself and his neighbors.
According to Sgt. Richard Chipping, Salt Lake City Police Department, officers responded to the suspect’s apartment building near 260 South 500 East after he made multiple calls to their dispatch center and made threats.
The SWAT standoff started at 9:30 p.m. Sunday and ended Monday at about 3:00 a.m.
Sgt. Chipping told News4Utah’s Brittany Johnson that the standoff lasted many hours because the suspect was volatile and they didn’t want things to escalate.
“[The suspect] He went back into the apartment and on the balcony multiple times. Sometimes he had a knife and I think he had a fake gun or like a BB gun at some point,” said Chipping.
During the standoff SWAT teams evacuated the apartments next door to and above the suspect.
The suspect was taken into custody and then transported to a mental health facility for evaluation.
